After being hospitalised due to severe domestic violence, a courageous woman, Stacy*, was referred to LocalKind’s Domestic & Family Violence Support service. With limited English, she faced immense challenges, but through culturally responsive, trauma-informed care and access to translation support, she began a path toward safety and recovery.
Upon referral from hospital staff, who are increasingly aware of LocalKindโs support services, the client requested immediate police involvement. With the help of LocalKind and interpreters, she recorded a video statement that captured years of abuse. Thanks to newly introduced coercive control laws, this evidence led to a successful Apprehended Violence Order (AVO), offering critical legal protection.
LocalKind swiftly secured temporary accommodation in a safe location and implemented a 24-hour safety plan. The plan included school notifications, digital safety checks, and protective measures for her family. A child protection referral was also made to ensure continued safety and wellbeing.
Facing financial abuse and no independent access to funds, the client received a $5,000 Escaping Violence Payment. Our team helped her open her own bank account, connect with Centrelink, and access food and essentials through community services.
Translation services were vital throughout every step, ensuring the client could express her needs, understand her rights, and stay informed. While criminal and family court processes are expected to take time and we will continue to support her through it, LocalKind continues to provide daily emotional and practical support. She remains warmly welcomed at our community centre as she rebuilds her life.
Together, we support safety, dignity, and hope.
