BEYOND THE GLOVES - Free Boxing and Mentoring for girls aged 11-18yrs

term 4 Enrolments close on 19th October

🥊 Help her build confidence, connection and resilience.

Enrolments are open for Beyond the Gloves — LocalKind’s free boxing and mentoring program for girls aged 11–18.

Through light boxing circuits, mentoring and group activities, girls have opportunities to build self-esteem, practise managing emotions, develop a positive relationship with their bodies and connect with peers.

It’s a supportive space to try new challenges, recognise their strengths and build skills they can carry into friendships, school and everyday life.

We love seeing so many girls return each term and continue building on their progress. Returning participants need to re-enrol for Term 4 too, so we can confirm attendance and keep everyone’s details current.

📅 Tuesdays, 20 October-15 December (nine weekly sessions)
🕓 4–5pm
📍 Manly Youth & Community Centre, Kangaroo Street
💛 Free to attend

New and returning participants are welcome. Parents and carers can register and enrol here:

Beyond The Gloves Flyer Term 4 2026
“I love coming to Beyond the Gloves because it’s fun; we work out and talk about emotions and how to deal with some negative emotions and thoughts. The facilitator is a great, fun, encouraging person. I can relate to her, and she can relate to us, which is comforting. We always get to talk, which helps us gain confidence and happiness in who we are. Since coming to boxing, I have been able to control my emotions more and not get sad at small things or things that aren’t worth getting upset about. She has helped me with my diet, exercise, feeling confident in my body and helped me through tough things to do with family and friendships.” Beyond the Gloves participant

How Beyond the Gloves makes a difference

Confidence that carries into everyday life

Growing up can bring pressure around friendships, school, identity and body image. Beyond the Gloves gives girls aged 11–18 a supportive place to explore these experiences, recognise their strengths and build greater confidence in themselves.

At the heart of the program is empowerment: helping girls trust their judgement, express their needs, make choices and seek support when they need it. Light, non-contact boxing activities provide practical opportunities to try something unfamiliar, experience progress and discover what they are capable of. Facilitator-led mentoring and guided conversations help connect these experiences with everyday life.

Recognising strengths and building self-belief

Confidence grows through opportunities to participate, learn and feel encouraged. BTG helps girls recognise their abilities, reflect on how they speak to themselves and take manageable steps towards personal goals.

The program encourages a positive relationship with their bodies, with activities centred on movement, capability and participation. Girls can explore what matters to them and practise backing themselves, including when something feels difficult or unfamiliar.

Participants have reported greater self-confidence, a more positive outlook and feeling more comfortable in social situations.

Understanding emotions and responding to challenges

BTG helps girls develop language for their feelings, notice how stress shows up in their bodies and explore practical ways to respond. Movement, guided reflection and simple strategies such as breathing offer opportunities to practise managing strong emotions.

Resilience develops through recognising challenges, understanding personal limits and identifying a manageable next step. These skills can support girls as they navigate school pressures, changing friendships and everyday setbacks.

Participant feedback describes learning that feelings are valid and gaining strategies to manage distress. Parents and carers have also reported greater emotional awareness and more openness in conversations at home.

Finding connection and a sense of belonging

A consistent group can give girls somewhere to feel accepted, build trust and learn alongside others. Through shared activities and facilitated discussion, participants practise listening, encouraging one another and recognising that others may face similar challenges.

Conversations about friendships, boundaries and respectful communication help girls consider what healthy relationships feel like and how to express their needs. Participation is encouraged, with room to listen, reflect and contribute without pressure to share personal experiences.

Girls have described making new friendships and valuing the opportunity to talk openly with peers and a trusted facilitator. Parents and carers have highlighted the value of another supportive space beyond home and school.

Having a voice and knowing where to turn

BTG supports girls in recognising that their views matter. Participants can contribute to group discussions, help shape shared expectations and practise communicating what feels right for them.

The aim is for girls to leave with greater confidence to make decisions, set boundaries and ask for help. Where additional support is needed, LocalKind can help connect participants and families with appropriate services.

Participants have identified respecting their own boundaries, standing up for themselves and others, and knowing where to seek help as skills they can carry beyond the program.

Small changes can make a meaningful difference

Impact can look like joining a conversation, trying an unfamiliar activity, recognising a strength or sharing a concern with someone trusted.

Feedback from participants and families describes changes extending into friendships, school and home life. Some participants reported feeling better able to respond to bullying and engage at school. Parents and carers described increased compassion, confidence with peers and, in one family’s experience, reduced conflict at home.

These experiences reflect what BTG works towards: girls feeling more connected, more capable and more confident in shaping their own lives.

Beyond the Gloves is funded by the NSW Government through the Department of Communities and Justice’s Community and Family Support (CAFS) program, enabling LocalKind to offer it free to participants.
