Client Impact Story: Creating Safety and Stability for Laura
Earlier this year, a brave woman named Laura* walked into LocalKind’s drop-in center seeking urgent support. Fleeing a situation of domestic violence involving her young child, Laura faced profound vulnerability—isolated as an immigrant with no nearby family or support network, and subjected to ongoing abuse and coercive control from a former partner.
A DVSAT risk assessment confirmed Laura’s situation as high-risk, prompting immediate intervention. A tailored safety plan was developed with strict communication protocols and secure document storage, as her former partner possessed advanced technical skills and closely monitored her devices. To ensure safety, all contact occurred through phone calls, and meetings were held at the community centre.
Emergency shelter accommodation was secured for three months in a safer region, requiring relocation and police assistance for departure. Laura’s child transitioned to a new school, and psychological support was arranged to help manage trauma and adjustment challenges. A child protection report was filed due to signs of abuse and distress, including nightmares and sleep issues.
To safeguard their wellbeing, LocalKind successfully secured a mediation exemption to prevent forced contact with the perpetrator. Financial assistance was arranged—including Escaping Violence and Crisis Payments—to ensure immediate stability. Laura received support setting up a personal bank account and applying for long-term housing.
Laura also engaged in financial counseling to manage debts and navigate Centrelink. A Victim Services application supported safety upgrades like lock changes and security cameras. With the help of our team, Laura didn’t have to repeat her story to various services to reduce retraumatization and streamline care delivery. Ongoing psychological services were arranged for both mother and child, reinforcing trauma recovery.
Laura continues her journey with the support of LocalKind, where safety, dignity, and hope guide every step forward.
